I have the same tractor, and I was always having a difficult time starting it ...what a pain
..I eventually replaced the ignition system with an electronic one, and replaced the battery, starter and the battery cables ...my problems went away ...the other solution is to convert to a 12 volt system. The 6 volt solution becomes a problem as these tractors age. Too many losses (voltage drops) through out the ignition switches, wiring, etc. etc. and the spark is not "hot" enough during the starting process when the starter is drawing large amounts of current.

I have a 601 that is very easily flooded, consequently I give it no gas when I start it.In the summer no gas and no choke,in the winter choke and just a little gas. D.T.
