Hard drive not recognised, machine hangs...?

Hi All,

Pentium 4 3.4GHz
Asus P5P800 M/B
2 GB RAM
250GB Seagate ST3250620NS (SATA)
200GB Maxtor 6L200SO (SATA)
ATI Radeon 9550
XP SP2

I had Vista installed on the Seagate drive, but wanted to reinstall Vista, and also install XP on the other drive so I could dual boot.

When installing XP, I had it format the Seagate drive (which had Vista on it) and install itself on that drive, but the installation failed and now the drive seems to be semi invisible. I installed XP on the Maxtor drive OK.

When I boot up with both drives attached, I get to the motherboard splash screen and there everything comes to a halt. As soon as the splash screen appears, I can press Del which should take me into the Bios, but all that happens is a list of drives comes up – both drives are on it, and the machine hangs.

If I have just the Seagate drive plugged in, the computer recognises it at the start of the boot-up process; i.e. it appears if I press Del, but then the machine just hangs.

There would seem to be a conflict between the C: drive with XP on it, and the drive with the failed installation of XP on it.

So we’re probably down to 1 question:

Is there any way of getting the computer to recognise the drive and then deleting the data on it so I can reinstall Vista?

If the answer is ‘no’, then I’ll get myself a new drive, but obviously I don’t really want to throw away a perfectly good drive if it can be recovered.

Thanks for any help…

Phil

Thanks for that, but it's stopped working altogether now. Even with the disks disconnected it doesn't even get to the beep of the POST.
So it's now a doorstop until I can eventually find the time to sort it out!

If yo install the drive on IDE1 as master & insert a start-up floopy disk for Win 98 or XP. after setting your bios to 1st. boot from floopy at the A:\ prompt type fdisk then delete all partitions. switch off P/C & restart to bios & set CD to 1st. boot then restart with XP CD in your CD reader you will be given the option to create a partition on which to install XP or provided with a report on the state of your hard drive & the reason for any failure to accept installatio of the OS.

Thanks for your reply; but no, it won't boot from anywhere with the Seagate drive attached.
