Your thread answers your question "so with the help of a friend who is competant with gas" if he has the gas certificates and was an RGI (registered gas installer) he would know exactely what is wrong. If I was you I would turn off the appliance and get it looked at by a proffesional installer as it is illegal to touch/mess around with any gas appliance without the required gas certificates for that type of appliance. If something terrible happens (and I hope not) you will probally find your house insurance will not pay up!!
