Julie is correct in her email, as I did have trouble trying to get the top nut out. just slowly push it up with a flat head screw driver and it should pop off.. why do they make these simple things so hard??

after spending half an hour trying, i discovered the wing nut after googling it. However, there is a small rubber plug t the top which is holding in place. If you can get a screwdriver in the gap it should prise off.
I know the answer is a little late but I'm hoping it might help others! Ford should really have put this in the manual!

undoing the two screws and the butterfly wing nut was straightforward but I could not lift the unit off the body as it appeared to be held on near the top by some form of fastening. Can anyone help?

I have just changed my brake bulbs as both went within a week of each other.
You need to take the whole light unit off the rear of the car via 2 star screws on the outside (firstly undoing the wiring plug & plastic bit that holds the whole thing on via a large threaded rod from the inside)
Voila!

This could be either a bad earth, or a broken wire - also check the connections are clean. Obviously I presume you have checked the bulb is working and fuses are ok. - Brian
