Thankyou John. My Boiler is not a combi one and I omitted to say that when the overflow takes place I also have a loss of hot water from the hot tap.

I might be talking absolute rubbish here but this really is an interesting one....I thought that thermostatically controlled taps had to be fed with the same pressure - that is cold from the mains and hot from a combi boiler (still mains pressure). Whats happening is that cold water from the mains is entering the hot supply from your copper cylinder and loft tank, hence causing the overflow.
