Instaling replacement spotliight in kitchen. Connected live for live neutral for neutral earth for earth. Light comes on, flick switch fuse blows.

How many cable have you got for each colour. One of the black ones is a 'Switched live' and usually has red tape on it.

All reds together
All blacks together (apart from 'Switched live') and to neutral of light
Switched live to live of light
All earths together.

Changing a light fitting is not contravening anything, adding new circuits is.

You are causing a short circuit because one of those cables that you think is a neutral is probably a switched live.

Second, unless you are a 'Competent Person' DIY electrics in the kitchen now contravenes UK Building Regs.

Get an electrician before you have real problems.
