I was looking up the information on my disposal so i knew which one to buy to replace it and came across this discussion. Wow, I'm glad I did because I followed the instructions from "freaking genius" and it worked. My disposal works fine. Thanks "freaking genius" for saving me $80 - 100 and an hour of labor!

you all make it way too difficult! on the bottom of the dispenser is a small opening for an allen tool. find the right size allen tool and turn it until it turns freely. tadaaa

it wasn't a 5/16. It was a 9/16 socket. and I did mine in place with an extension and a flashlight.

Thanks Jerry
The alternative method is not to take the unit out but try and move the circular plate by a long screwdriver

Jerry,
Thanks for the answer. Worked for me too and took about 5 minutes to figure it all out once i got inside. Mine took a 14mm, but then I couldn't find a 5/16, so that may have indeed been the right size. Thanks again.

I hope this isn't too late. I just had the same problem. Ok, first of all, UNPLUG UNIT!!! (Don't wanna zap you!)Its easiest to take the unit out from under your sink.
Ok, now if you look down the inside through the top, you'll see a nut in the middle (not the two "spinny" things, the middle nut.) I think its a 5/16". You'll need a wratchet, socket and extension to reach down in there. Turn the nut with the wrench (clockwise or counter-clockwise doesn't matter.) If the big plate under the nut doesn't spin freely, something is stuck on the edge, and you will have to use some muscle to get it to move. Once you do, the unit should spin free. Clean out any pieces (shake the unit upside down if you can.) Now, on the bottom is a red button, press it in if its not already in. Stand the unit upright near an electrical outlet. MAKE SURE ALL TOOLS AND YOUR HANDS AND FINGERS ARE OUTSIDE OF THE UNIT (TOP AND SIDES!!)
Plug the unit in. If the outlet has a switch, turn it on. The disposal should work. Unplug it right away, and shut off the outlet if you turned it on.
If that worked, put it all back together under your sink, and use it. Otherwise, if none of this worked, I'm stumped.
