how can i fix the dvd and cd in my 600 gateway computer?

my cd no longer plays in my computer and the dvd no longer plays i cannot copy a cd it my computer says they are not installed but i have copied many cds any help would be appreciated.there is a toshiba 12x dvd drive and read and write4x/4x/24x ide cd rom drive in the computer
