I use CCleaner on ever build & rebuild - it works just great and really does sort out a whole load of problems in general.
(1) Ccleaner - remove the crap, scan and registry scan;
(2) connect to Internet and download Spybot, install, run and Immunize, Update and Immunize again;
(3) Download and install [ either ] AVG8.5 or Avira Anti-Virus and do a full scan.
Your PC / laptop should be as clean as a whistle now.

The best way to do this is a good clean up of windows. Something like CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) to clear temp files and clean registry followed by a malware scan from malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) should help a lot.
The most common reason for slow startup is the number of programs running at windows startup.
Go to START - RUN and type 'msconfig' to open the configuartion window - Under the startup tab is all the progam you have set to run at windows startup, disable some of these that you dont use all the time.
As example I have disabled SKYPE and OFFICE from loading at startup. Yes i do use these apps but not every time i start my PC. Printer tools and monitors are quite slow and commonly slow logins.
If your not sure of something leave it ENABLED.
Another thing you can do is press CTRL ALT DEL and go to TASK MANAGER, under performance tab there is a Physical Memory section.
Reads something like Total: Available: and System Cache. If Total is less than 1000000 (1gb) or the available is less than 250000 (250mb) then i would consider more RAM for your PC.
There is anothe PAGE FILE USAGE HISTORY bar/line graph just above that. If the line is approaching half way up the table its more RAM time. These are not exact but give a general idea of the state of play. Not enough RAM will dreadfully slow the PC.
